Product
Description |
| |
The apparatus has
been designed to evaluate the strength characteristics
of plastic polymers when the temperature is increased
at a set rate. Heat distortion determines the point on
a temperature ramp at which a test sample, subject to
a given bending stress, will deflect a predetermined amount.
Vicat determines the point on a temperature ramp at which
a loaded tip, having a precise area, will penetrate a
test sample by a predetermined amount. |
| |
| |
Ray-Ran's well
proven advanced dedicated microprocessor technology used
throughout the Polytest range of test equipment has been
incorporated into the 6 Station Advanced HDT/Vicat Softening
Point Apparatus. The microprocessor integration has taken
measurement accuracy to new levels. |
| |
| |
The Ray-Ran microprocessor
has been designed to provide the widest possible choice
of test parameters, extending far beyond those specified
by International test standards. Therefore, if the need
arose, companies could establish their own test parameters
for special cases that cannot be accommodated within the
scope of the International test standards. |
| |
| |
The machine's operation
is ergonomically simple. Parameters and test results are
displayed in the large, easy to read liquid crystal display.
Data entry is via a simple touch membrane keypad. Test
procedures are self prompting direct from the microprocessor.
The built-in printer gives hard copy test results and
statistics. |
| |
| |
Supplied as standard
is an RS232 output and a Windows based software program.
Both
tabular and graphical presentation of results are given.
| |
| |
Two specific tests
can be performed in compliance with all International
test standards. |

Heat Distortion Test
(HDT) |
| |
Determines the
temperature along a constantly increasing temperature
ramp at which a test sample, subjected to a given fiber
bending stress, deflects by a set vertical distance concurrent
with the applied force inducing the stress. |
| |
| |
Vicat Test |
| |
Determines the
temperature along a constantly increasing temperature
ramp at which an
indent tip, having a defined projected area and subjected
to a given vertical force, penetrates into the surface
of a test sample by a set vertical distance. |

International Test Standards |
| |
The design, operation and calibration
of the apparatus conforms to all International test standards
for heat distortion and vicat testing, including the new
ISO test standard for flatwise HDT. |
| |
| |
Test Weights
| |
For Vicat, 1 kg and 5 kg test
weights are available. For HDT, required test weights
are calculated by the microprocessor based on the sample
size and fiber stress selected. A modular binary test
weight system is available to encompass all samples sizes.
| |
| |
Cooling |
| |
An integral cooling coil is
fitted inside the bath for rapid cooling by water. Cooling
is automatically operated by the microprocessor upon termination
of the test. |

Heat Transfer Medium |
| |
IFor temperatures up to 200 C, Dow Corning
210H high shear silicone fluid is required. For higher
temp. Dow Corning 550 is suitable. When using temperatures
above 250 C a Nitrogen blanket is essential. |
| |
| |
Temperature Ramp Rates |
| |
For both HDT and Vicat the choice
defaults to either 120 C/hour or 50 C/hour. A variable
option to cover non-standards is also given. |
| |
| |
Fiber Stresses |
| |
For HDT the choice defaults
are 0.45 mpa, 1.80 mpa and 8.00 mpa. A fourth option for
non-standard fiber stresses is also available. |
| |
| |
Span Support |
| |
For HDT testing span supports
are quickly adjustable from 100 mm to 64 mm. |
| |
| |
HDT Deflection |
| |
The choice defaults to the standard
0.25 mm. A second option is available for non-standard
deflection. |
| |
| |
Vicat Test Penetration |
| |
The choice defaults to 0.1 mm
(0.1 Vicat) and 1.00 mm (1.0 Vicat). A third option is
also available for non-standard deflection. |

3800-20-00 : Set of 14 Modular
Binary Test Weights |
| |
A new system using a progression
of weights has now been incorporated for HDT. A set of
14 different test weights with 1 gram progression is available
which combine to give any load from 1 gram to 3119 grams.
Loads are easily calculated based on the test sample dimensions
and the fiber stress selected. |
